Mannum - a remarkable town on the Murray River
(the birth place of the Australian Paddle Steamer)

A brief introduction

After the Amazon and Nile, the Murray is the world’s third longest navigable river. Mannum, in South Australia, is one of her greatest treasures. It is here that inland Australia, as far and beyond as Wentworth in NSW, was opened up to farming by William Randels’ paddle steamer. Australia’s first car was built by the Shearer Company and the town grew as a major shipping port en route to Port Adelaide.

Today you can still enjoy the buzz of those yesteryears. During your stay you can be studying river history at the Mannum Dock Museum or lazily enjoying a long lunch at the old Mannum Hotel, and of course a river cruise is essential while you are here. Mannum is a pretty place where life still centres around the river. Whilst enjoying an increase in population and development, it still retains the charm of a friendly country town that offers much for those in search of a "riverchange" from city pressures. Just imagine, a town with no traffic lights!

A Note for International Visitors

For International travelers seeking to experience the true Australian way of life, a visit to the Murray River is essential. Today the river is alive with Tourism and Recreational activities, from high spirited water sports to docile cruise ships, eco tourism and romantic getaways for couples. The Murray River as a tourist destination is at this point not exploited by the International Tourist market. It is presently a domestic holiday destination where you can observe and partake in a truly unique Australian way of life.
